The Evens Prize for Peace Education 2015

With its Prize for Peace Education, the Evens Foundation seeks to detect and recognize good practices in the field of conflict management education, and to support sustainable projects in this field in Europe.

In this 2015 edition of our biannual European prize, we looked for initiatives and practices that strive to awaken and strengthen the social competence of preschool children, focusing especially on skills that facilitate a constructive attitude towards conflict.

The independent jury of international experts selected the Ghent nursery Tierlantuin as the winner from a shortlist of 14 projects from all over Europe. The nursery will receive an award of €25,000, part of which will be used to disseminate their good practice in other European countries. All shortlisted candidates have been invited to an exchange seminar in the framework of the Conflict Matters conference, to share experiences and good practices.

A special evening of celebration and conversation will be organized on 22 October 2015 in De Loketten of the Flemish Parliament in Brussels.

The keynote address will be given by Brenda Taggart, Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Education, University College London, and leading expert in preschool education. Her speech is titled “The Power of Preschool: Evidence from UK Research”. She will talk about the academic and social-behavioral development of children and the benefits of high-quality early-year education, including the importance of the family and home learning environment before the age of three on a child’s long-term outcome.

Then we will have a conversation about the laureate project, between Tomas Baum, chairman of the international jury of experts of the Evens Prize for Peace Education, Katrien Verhegge, general administrator of Kind en Gezin (Child & Family), Katrien Reynaert, director at Tierlantuin, and Elke Decruynaere, Alderwoman for Education and Youth of the City of Ghent.

Flemish Minister for Welfare, Public Health and Family Jo Vandeurzen will close the evening.

This evening is being organized in collaboration with the Flemish Peace Institute. Simultaneous translation English-Dutch will be provided. The Award Ceremony will be followed by a reception.

Please confirm your attendance by email to or by telephoning 0032-3-231 39 70 by 15 October 2015.
